When visiting the Office of the Student and Faculty Ombudsperson, students and faculty can expect the ombudsperson to listen and work with you to determine your interests and goals. The ombudsperson may provide support or assistance by helping you with the following services.

  • Consultations to discuss concerns
  • Strategy development to help resolve conflict
  • Communication and conflict coaching to help resolve conflict and improve relationships
  • Mediation
  • Facilitation
  • Policy and procedure navigation
  • Referrals to appropriate university resources

The ombudsperson will:

  • Advocate for fairness
  • Assist in resolving problems
  • Help students and faculty become more competent at resolving conflict, which in turn helps CMU become more conflict competent
  • Report on aggregated data in a manner that upholds confidentiality and anonymity to allow administration to view trends associated with systems issues that may relate to concerns or conflict within the university
  • Provide referrals to the appropriate office of notice
  • With permission from the individual, involve leaders to resolve issues and remove barriers to success for students and faculty
  • Use a variety of tools and strategies to help resolve conflict that affect student and faculty issues related to their lives at CMU

The ombudsperson will not:

  • Provide legal advice to anyone
  • Serve as an office of notice to the university 
  • Participate in formal processes as an advocate for any party 
  • Maintain records of cases for the university
